Abstract

From a point of view that is internal to the discipline of architecture, this text traces the ways in which architectural theory has been produced in Italy by establishing a dialogue with Stephan Tru?by. In his Necessità della teoria (1983) Gregotti sets a starting point for describing theoretical studies in Italy at a moment that was particularly significant for architectural practice in Italy and Europe. The necessity for theory is called on as «material structurally indispensable to the architectural profession», but the fragmentation of theoretical production is nonetheless ackowledged, a fragmentation that is still visible today. Through an excursus of a number of texts that, from 2008 on, have attempted to bring back to the center of the profession the production of theory, it is made clear how design research aims first and foremost at understanding and interpreting the complexity of a changing world.
