Cannibalism City

Abstract

This visual essay, Cannibalism City, depicts an imaginary city under the attack of COVID-19 in different perspectives. Since January 2020, many cities have been locked down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Overwhelming news on mass media has been building a thick wall and stuffily enclosed the city. Two significant ensuing policies are quarantine and social distancing, which have a profound impact on social urban life and gradually expose the cannibal nature of the city. The pandemic is just a triggering event. In fact, the essence of cannibalism is composed of even more complicated social issues, including racial discrimination, class conflict, political disputes, etc. This pandemic is also a magnifying glass, through which these social issues are examined in detail. This visual essay challenges the status quo and leads people to rethink this pandemic.
